Checklist link: European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris)
There was a visit from a European Starling to the feeder today. From the cam video, he didn’t stay very long, but it was a nice change of pace from the huge group of sparrows, and the few cardinals and juncos that have been hanging around. It’s possible that the squirrels did scare the starling off from staying longer than a few minutes. It’s also possible that the European Starling also likes the feed on the ground better. Some of the bigger birds feed more from the ground droppings than from the feeder itself, depending on the day. I’m working on capturing clearer photos for the actual Ebird pictures. The cam doesn’t provide the best photo quality but I am working on the snapshots.
It states in the Ebird writeup that this bird travels in huge flocks. However, to my knowledge this is the only bird that came to this feeder. The other birds must be elsewhere. This bird looks to be a breeding adult when compared to the other European starling pictures on the website.
