Checklist link: Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata)

We had our first Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) since setting up the feeder in August. Sure, blue jays, like the cardinals, are a common bird in the Midwest. However, it was still fun seeing a bigger, more colorful bird rather than just the smaller sparrows and the cardinals to this particular feeder. Yes, the male cardinals are colorful as well, but we seem to have more female cardinals, rather than the male ones. The blue jay is also a tad larger than them as well. The mourning dove that visited at the end of September was a much larger bird than the blue jay of today is, but it didn’t stay long, and it wasn’t quite as colorful. There isn’t a whole lot of description as to how to distinguish between the male and female blue jay on the ebird site, so I wasn’t really able to figure it out.

I managed to capture my first couple of soundbites. The first link is for a House Sparrow (Passer domesticus).

The second soundbite is for a House Finch (Haemorhous mexicanus). As with all of my previous picture and sound attempts thus far, none are winning any awards, but I need to start somewhere.

other Ebird posts:
Common Raven (Corvus corax), Black-billed Magpie (Pica hudsonia), Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon)
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura)
