Exciting day for the feeder. Amongst the usuals the sparrows, the blue jay, the finches and the cardinals were two new bird species since the feeder have been up. A Red-Bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) and a Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) were the two new species. It’s hard to tell from this picture since this picture is blurry, but I believe the woodpecker is a female since there is no red belly, just a red top of the head. From the pictures on the ebird website, it looks like that is the difference between the male and female woodpecker from a glance. I’m no bird expert though, just going off of the pictures of others.
If I had to take a guess, it would be that the junco is a slate-colored male, just because the coloring is darker and more distinct.
