Checklist link: American Crow
(Corvus brachyrhynchos) and Brown-headed Cowbird
Molothrus ater
I had trouble identifying this bird at first. At first glance, it seems like the American Crow which is a very common bird around here. However, this bird arrived with a large flock of Brown-Headed Cowbirds. Previous to gaining access to this feeder and watching the birds I never paid attention to the color of a darkly colored bird to notice the differences. I wanted to classify this bird as a blackbird or even a shiny cowbird, but the beak nor the eyes matched the description as well as the American Crow. Brewer’s blackbirds have yellow eyes, and this bird has the darker eyes same as the crow.

These cowbirds descended upon the feeder very aggressively and upset the mood that the sparrows had developed. There were a few of them and they followed all of the habits you would expect from the writeups about them.
