Jim Boeheim is one of the most successful coaches in basketball history. He is the second winningest coach in NCAA history behind Coach K from Duke. He has coached Syracuse to the Final Four in 1987, 1996, 2003 and 2013 making him the only coach to make Final Four in four different decades (until Coach K makes it back to another Final Four.) Since they are so intertwined in the college basketball record books, tonight’s match up at Cameron Indoor Stadium between Duke and Syracuse was highly anticipated. The game earlier this season at the Carrier Dome is considered by most to be the game of the year in college basketball. Tonight’s game was as dynamic but the finish has set the internet on fire.
With 10.4 seconds left in the game, Syracuse had just tied the game on a layup…or so everyone thought. Instead, the referees decided to take over the game and called a charge on Syracuse:
It was a close play. Definitely close enough to swallow the whistle and let the last 10 seconds play out and perhaps decide it in overtime…again. Most analysts that I have seen have said that there is no way it was a charge under the new rules in college. The call set Jim Boeheim into a furious rampage that resulted in technical fouls and his ejection from the game. It clinched the game for the Blue Devils and perhaps could have an impact on seeding for the March Madness. Here is Jim Boeheim’s rampage:
That rampage resulted in a great pic that took the off on the internet:
People immediately begin photoshopping the photo into famous scenes and Twitter was a laugh riot:
Here Jim Boeheim is running on the beach with the Baywatch lifeguards.
Jim Boeheim running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain.
And my personal favorite…Jim Boeheim photoshopped into the ending of the movie Ghostbusters…running from the Stay Puft Marshallow Man.
Syracuse and Duke can still meet in the ACC Conference Tournament and in the NCAA Tournament. If those games would be anything like the previous two…then I am all for it.
