The Cubs announced this morning that they had relieved Dale Sveum of his duties as manager. I liked Coach Sveum. He always treated me nicely and I will always fondly remember his first day on the job. I was working security at the door of the United Club, checking in the media, for the press conference announcing his hiring. On his way in to the press conference…the biggest moment of his professional life…he stopped to talk to me. He introduced himself and asked me a couple of questions about myself and asked if I was going to be someone he would see around the ballpark. I couldn’t believe that he was taking the time to get to know me. That was just the kind of person that he was. In the end, it didn’t work out as anyone invested in the success of the Cubs would have liked. But that will not ruin my memory of what a decent human being Coach Sveum was. At the end of the day, that is all we have anyway. Everyone will have success and everyone will have failure. Not everyone will be able to say they were a kind, decent human being. So best of luck in your future endeavors, Coach. Hopefully there will be less stressful moments than these:
