Snow = Football Weather

Today was the first major snow day across the NFL.  All the east coast games had to contend with it and USA Today shared several great photos from the snow games:

The Baltimore Ravens pulled one out in the final seconds against the Minnesota Vikings in snowy Baltimore.  5 touchdowns were scored in the final 2:05 of the game.  The Ravens scored a TD and got a 2 pt conversion to go up 15-12 w/ 2:05 left.  The Vikings were without Adrian Peterson due to his being carted off the field with an ankle injury.  Toby Gerhart filled AP’s shoes and scored on a 41 yard TD run to put MIN up 19-15 with 1:27 left.  Jacoby Jones returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to put BAL back in front 22-19 with 1:16 left.  Cordarrelle Patterson then had a 79 yard TD catch to put MIN back in the lead 26-22 with 45 seconds remaining.  Marlon Brown then caught the GW TD with 4 seconds left in the game to give the Ravens the 29-26 win.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen an NFL game end with that many TDs in 2:05 of game time with 5 lead changes.  Unbelievable.

Jamaal Charles and the Kansas City Chiefs ran all over the Washington Redskins in the snow to win 45-10 at FedEx Field.  The Redskins were embarrassed and humiliated at home and the fallout continued after the game.  Sources started reporting that Washington head coach Mike Shanahan almost quit in January and rumors are swirling that he may not even last the night as coach.  The Redskins have been a wreck all season and RGIII has been a shell of what he was last year before Shanahan left him in the playoff game way too long and RGIII ended up tearing up his knee.  The KC Chiefs moved to 10-3 on the season and pretty much guaranteed themselves a playoff berth.  Jamaal Charles finished with 151 yards rushing and 1 rushing TD and 1 receiving TD.  Charles is really enjoying playing the Michael Westbrook/LeSean McCoy role in Andy Reid’s offense.

The Miami Dolphins proved a lot of critics wrong and won in the cold and snow by beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-28 in a snowy Pittsburgh.  I think Miami’s victory speaks more loudly about how far the Steelers have fallen (5-7 on the year, only 3-2 at home) than it does on how good the 7-6 Dolphins are this season.  Ben Roethlisberger had 3 TD passes with no INTs but it was not enough for the win.  He is having a great year for a QB on such a lousy team.  Lots of rumblings of maybe the Steelers trying to trade Roethlisberger and starting a complete rebuild.

The Philadelphia Eagles won their 5th game in a row by beating the inept Detroit Lions in a huge snowfall in Philly.  The win put the Eagles in good positioning for the race to the NFC playoffs and really put a damper on the Lions playoff hopes.  Lions are still in the lead for the NFC North title but they have a tough schedule ahead of them and they have now lost 7 straight December/January regular season games.

It’s snowing today in Chicago so there is a chance that there will be another snow game in the NFL this weekend when the Chicago Bears host the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football.  Tis the season.
