Johnny Football set the college football world on fire last year as he became the first ever freshman to win the coveted Heisman Trophy. It was a magical season for the Texas A&M Aggies as they burst onto the scene in the SEC. The Aggies were able to pull off a shocking upset of the national champion Alabama Crimson Tide in the game that introduced Johnny Manziel to the country. He went on to finish his freshman season with 3706 passing yards, 26 TD passes, only 9 interceptions and 1410 yards rushing with 21 rushing TDs.
The Aggies came into the 2013 season as legitimate national title contenders and Johnny Football was a strong favorite to become first player since Archie Griffin to win back to back Heisman Trophies. He had a horrible offseason where he had taken money to sign autographs putting his eligibility into question. He was eventually suspended for the first half of the first game of the year as punishment. In addition to the autograph scandal, there were numerous stories of him getting kicked out of parties and just generally being a pompous entitled douche.
The season started and Johnny Football was leading most of the pundits ballots for getting the repeat. His passing numbers were improved over his freshman campaign. He was doing amazing things on the field and it looked like all the off the field nonsense was having no affect on him. His QB rating is 30 points higher than last year. He already has more TD passes and almost as many passing yards. However, his rushing totals are WAY down. He has about half as many yards and not even half the rushing touchdowns as last season. Alabama was able to get revenge on the Aggies although Manziel almost led Texas A&M to a huge comeback. He was still sitting on the top of the board and then the Aggies lost a shootout to the Auburn Tigers. People still blamed the Aggies defense for the two losses and kept Johnny towards the top of their list. However, today was just a huge egg for Manziel to lay on national television. There were no good games today in the entire college football world. The noon games were atrocious. The 3:30 games weren’t much better. The marquee matchup was A&M vs. LSU on CBS. While the other candidates were kicking tomato cans around on the field, Manziel was turning in his worst performance of his career. 16 of 41 passing. 224 yards. 1 TD pass but 2 INTs. 54 yards rushing on 12 carries and A&M was thoroughly dominated by LSU 34-10. Finally it was a loss that wasn’t solely on the defense because the offense couldn’t score. 3 losses, controversy and a horrible game when all eyes were on him because there wasn’t anything else worth watching…that doesn’t equal a good day for Johnny Football.
The only bright spots for him as far as the Heisman Trophy goes is that Florida State QB Jameis Winston is being investigated for sexual battery and Oregon QB Marcus Mariota also had an awful game as the Ducks got hammered by the Arizona Wildcats and LSU is better than Arizona. I still don’t see any way that the voters go with Manziel for a second year in a row unless Winston is arrested soon or Oregon gets blown out by Oregon State as well.
