The NFL no longer has any winless teams in the 2013 season. The Jacksonville Jaguars got their first win on the season on Sunday by defeating the Tennessee Titans 29-27. The Titans lost their starting QB Jake Locker for the rest of the season due to a foot injury suffered during the game and Ryan Fitzpatrick was almost able to lead the Titans to a comeback victory but ran out of time. The deciding two points in the game ended up being a safety that was awarded to the Jaguars in the 4th quarter when Chance Warmack was called for holding in the end zone. Jacksonville only had 214 yards of total offense but four turnovers by the Titans were the deciding factor of the game. Jacksonville was able to score 17 points off those turnovers including a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown with just over two minutes left in the game to make it 29-20. It was as ugly as can be but a win is a win and the Titans should be embarrassed. Some claim they were looking ahead to Thursday’s game against the Colts. Is that what the Colts were doing too as they were getting manhandled and embarrassed by the Rams 38-8?
The other winless team in the league going into this week’s games was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They have had medical issues with their team as several players came down with MERSA. There were rumors of a mutiny brewing in Tampa Bay where the players don’t like head coach Greg Schiano and that he wouldn’t survive the season. People thought that the Buccaneers were the team with the most upheaval in the league. Then along came the Miami Dolphins and Bullygate. I won’t get into my thoughts on the issue in this blog. That is a blog for another time. But the Dolphins are in so much disarray and have been pulled in so many directions the last couple of weeks that they are in shambles. The proof is in their performance against Tampa Bay. The Dolphins finished the game with two yards rushing. Two yards. They had 213 yards of total offense or 1 yard less than the Jaguars. They still almost won because it was the Buccaneers they were playing after all but the Dolphins didn’t force four turnovers like the Jaguars did. It was a humiliating performance and they might go down in the record books as the only team to lose to Tampa this season. The Jaguars and Buccaneers are in a dogfight for the first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Which team can continue to suck the most in order to get that pick?
Whichever team finishes worse, I can guarantee that the celebration won’t match up to the highlight of the weekend for these two teams. 340 pound Donald Penn of the Buccaneers celebrating by slam dunking the football over the goalpost:
