Red Sox with an epic comeback vs. Tigers

The Red Sox were almost no hit in the first game of the 2013 ALCS vs. the Tigers.  Detroit took the no hitter into the 9th inning and won Game 1.  It was the first time that the Red Sox had been shut out at home in the postseason since the 1918 World Series vs. the Chicago Cubs.  Detroit pitchers ended the game with 17 Ks.  Anibal Sanchez had 4 Ks in one inning.  The first time that had happened in the postseason since the Chicago Cubs did it in the 1908 World Series.

Game 2 started off just like Game 1.  The Red Sox were being dominated by Max Scherzer and were being no hit into the 6th inning.  Scherzer was taken out after throwing 7 innings allowing 2 hits, 1 run and striking out 13.  The Tigers had a 5-1 lead when he left the game and it looked like they were going to go home with a 2-0 lead with Justin Verlander waiting to take the mound.  Miggy Cabrera and Alex Avila homered in the sixth to give the Tigers a 5 run lead.  The disgust and anger in the Red Sox fans boiled over to the point where this scumbag fan ripped the home run ball out of a female fan’s hands and threw the ball back onto the field.  You aren’t at Wrigley Field, pal.  Even at Wrigley Field, you don’t pry the ball out of someone’s hand so you can throw it back out onto the field.  Don’t be a jerk:

Maybe that was what woke up the Red Sox.  Maybe it was knowing that the Patriots also had a late comeback to beat the Saints today in Boston.  Maybe it is the fact that the Tigers bullpen just sucked tonight.  Either way, David Ortiz hit a historic Grand Slam to tie the game 5-5 in the bottom of the 8th inning.  It was the first tying grand slam in postseason history that happened in the 8th inning or later:

The Tigers did absolutely nothing at the plate in the 9th inning.  You could tell they were totally demoralized by the Grand Slam.  Sure enough, the Red Sox won it on a walkoff single by Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the bottom of the 9th inning after Prince Fielder dropped a foul pop up by the stands and a wild pitch.

The Tigers still have home field advantage courtesy of their Game 1 victory.  They still have Justin Verlander to throw Game 3.  But I’m not so sure that they can recover from such an epic collapse.  Boston may not lose again this series if they can get the win over Verlander in Game 3.
