New England Patriots (5-1) 30 def. New Orleans Saints (5-1) 23
The game of the day so far has undeniably been the Patriots vs. Saints. New Orleans went into Foxboro undefeated and as the favorite according to most experts. Drew Brees did not have one of his best games. Brees finished the game 17 of 36 for only 236 yards, 2 TDs and 1 costly INT. It looked like the Saints were going to get the victory when they took a 24-23 lead with 3:30 left in the game, their first lead since 2 minutes into the 2nd quarter. The Saints tacked on a FG a minute later and looked to be in full control at 27-23. However, Tom Brady did Tom Brady things and marched the Patriots down the field for the winning touchdown with 5 seconds left in the game. It was not a great game by any stretch of the imagination for Brady though. 25 for 43 for 269 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Brady isn’t too blame for everything though as his WRs dropped about 10 passes on the day. The chemistry between Tom Brady and this crop of WRs can be summed up with one GIF from today’s game. Here is Julian Edelman walking right past Brady on the sidelines and leaving the QB hanging on an attempted high five:
Kenbrell Thompkins saved the day though when he finally held on to a ball…the 17 yard TD with 5 seconds left. After the Saints defense gave up the last second TD for their first loss of the season, the look on Saints Defensive Coordinator, Rob Ryan’s face was priceless:
THE DUDE ABIDES!
St. Louis Rams (3-3) 38 def. Houston Texans (2-4) 13
This had to be among the worst week’s in the Matt Schaub’s life. After throwing a Pick 6 for the 4th straight week in last week’s game, fans went to his house in Houston to heckle and harass him. That is definitely crossing the line on the fans’ part UNLESS you can prove that Schaub is sucking on purpose. There was a lot of media attention on Schaub and the Texans all week and they had a 2-3 Rams team coming to town. It was definitely a winnable game for them. Alas, the Rams beat them in every phase of the game. The bright spots for Houston: Matt Schaub did NOT throw another Pick 6 and Arian Foster rushed for 141 yards. On of the other end of the spectrum: Matt Schaub got injured in the 3rd quarter and the Texans fans CHEERED. What a lack of class! TJ Yates came in to the game and YOU GUESSED IT…promptly threw a Pick 6:
Be careful what you ask for Texan fans…you just might get it. To make matters worse, Rams QB Sam Bradford threw for 3 TDs and only 117 yards. I have never seen that in my life. Just an embarrassing game all around for the Texans and their fans. I’m not sure either can turn it around this season.
Detroit Lions (4-2) 31 def. Cleveland Browns (3-3) 17
The Browns had won 3 games in a row since trading Trent Richardson to the Colts. All the experts claimed the trade was proof that the Browns were giving up on the season. The experts were wrong. It looked like the Browns were well on their way to making it 4 straight wins even with Brandon Weeden back in as QB after the injury to Brian Hoyer last week. They had a 17-7 lead at the half. Then at halftime, one of the cutest things that you will ever see at a football game happened. Cleveland is known as the “Dog Pound” and fans wear dog masks. Well today they had a dog race in the dog pound and it was adorable:
That was the end of the highlights for Cleveland on the day though. The Lions got a TD in the 3rd quarter to pull to within 17-14 and then 5 minutes into the 4th quarter, Detroit took the lead on the second of three TD catches by TE Joseph Fauria. The Browns still had a chance at a comeback but Brandon Weedon did Brandon Weedon things and threw the most God awful INT that I have ever seen in my life. In the middle of getting sacked, he sidearm flipped the ball towards the sidelines for an easy INT. Stafford to Fauria for the 3rd time then capped the game for the Lions. Maybe Cleveland can trade Brandon Weedon to a semi-pro team in Montana and go on another 3 game win streak.
Now for the rest of the day’s results in the NFL:
